The Final Layer | Merlin House

We’re edging closer to the final finishing touches at Merlin House — a stage of every project I quietly treasure.

It’s the moment where months of conversations, decisions, revisions, discoveries, and trust begin to settle into place. Soon, the furniture is styled, the last details are refined, and the camera arrives to capture what has been created. But for me, the photographs are never just about the finished space.

They are a reflection of the journey.

A home is rarely created in a straight line. There are moments of excitement, uncertainty, unexpected pivots, and decisions that feel larger than they appear on paper. Behind every project sits a hundred moving parts that most clients never need to see — and that’s exactly as it should be.

Part of our role as designers is to carry that weight.

To navigate the complexities. To problem-solve quietly. To shield our clients from unnecessary stress. To hold the vision steady when challenges arise. And when a red light appears, to look beyond the obstacle and find the opportunity waiting behind it.

Even on Merlin House, a few unexpected hurdles became catalysts for better outcomes than we could have imagined at the beginning.

I’ve learnt time and again that the best projects are built on trust.

The Final Layer | Merlin House

We’re edging closer to the final finishing touches at Merlin House — a stage of every project I quietly treasure.

It’s the moment where months of conversations, decisions, revisions, discoveries, and trust begin to settle into place. Soon, the furniture is styled, the last details are refined, and the camera arrives to capture what has been created. But for me, the photographs are never just about the finished space.

A Few Days of Creative Pause in Tasmania

Last week, I finally made my first trip to Tasmania — a destination that has been on my list for many years.

Safe to say, I’m completely hooked.

As designers, we’re often moving at pace; solving problems, making decisions, creating, coordinating and constantly thinking ahead. There’s something incredibly valuable about slowing down for a few days and creating space to simply observe.

More than anything, I appreciated the quality time with the person I love. Those uninterrupted moments together feel increasingly precious amidst the busyness of life and business.

A heartfelt thank you to Bree and Jason for the privilege of staying at their extraordinary property, @ironstone_tasmania . The views, the atmosphere, the landscape and the generosity shown to us made for an unforgettable experience. There is something truly special being created there, and I can’t wait to watch their next chapter unfold — especially what lies ahead for their future wines.

I returned home inspired by a flurry of architecture, innovative building materials, rural design thinking, and the pure beauty of Tasmania’s natural landscape. It is a place that quietly reminds you that great design often begins by paying attention.

My creative cup is full, and the inspiration gathered over those few days has already fuelled a big week of project developments back in the studio.

Reflecting on a beautiful weekend in Tasmania. There is something about walking through nature that creates space for ideas to settle, connect and grow. Client solutions, future projects and new possibilities often arrive when the mind is free to wander. Although judging by these photos, it appears creativity may also be directly linked to an accidental recreation of Gangnam Style through the Tasmanian bush. The ideas were flowing. My Muse…

The inspiration has been flowing in the most beautiful ways lately — across such a diverse range of projects, people and conversations. One thing we keep returning to is the power of custom design. Especially within lighting and joinery.

There’s something incredibly special about creating a piece that exists purely for one space, one family, one rhythm of living. Beyond function, custom pieces carry a personal fingerprint — a sense of individuality that can’t quite be replicated. Those are the moments we love most… when a design feels deeply connected to the people it was created for.

At the same time, we continue to feel inspired by the extraordinary creativity and collaborative spirit of our suppliers and makers. Design feels like it’s entering a brave and exciting chapter — one where materiality, form and construction are being challenged in the best possible ways. Creativity is no longer reserved for galleries or rare moments; it’s becoming part of everyday living. And with that comes a deeper understanding of how our environments shape emotion, wellbeing, energy and calm.

I’m also never shy to say that I thrive on learning. On staying curious. On exploring new ways of thinking, creating and evolving within my business and the design space. I truly believe part of our role as designers is to feel the world around us — listening carefully to how people want to live, what they need more of, what feels overwhelming, and ultimately… what may bring a little more joy to their everyday life through design.

Personally, I’ve also started reading Lifespan: Why We Age—and Why We Don’t Have To by David Sinclair — an incredibly eye-opening read — alongside daily practices and teachings through @mindvalley and @gabbybernstein . Creating space for meditation, openness and self-nurturing has become such an important part of how I move through both life and work. Caring for myself allows me to show up more creatively, more calmly and more intentionally for my family and treasured clients — truly a win for everyone.

Azure blue has emerged as one of the defining tones shaping interiors in 2026 — not as a cold coastal cliché, but as a layered, mineral-rich colour bringing depth, clarity and emotional calm into the home. Designers are moving away from stark whites and flat greys, leaning instead toward expressive blues that feel atmospheric, grounding and quietly confident.

What makes azure blue so compelling is its duality. It can feel tranquil and airy when paired with warm neutrals, stone and oak, yet bold and architectural beside oxbloods, corals, chocolate browns or deep wine tones. Fast forward, and it’s leading the room once again.

This iconic piece from de Sede captures it perfectly — sculptural, generous, and unapologetically social. It pulls people in, softens the space, and shifts the energy from structured to lived-in.

Curvy, calming, creative, conversational — officially hot again… and yes, we’re still talking about sofas.

The brief called for something fresh and resolved, where soft neutrals meet gentle timber moments to bring warmth without weight. Clean lines carry the space, allowing it to feel calm, practical, and considered in its daily rhythm.

A full-height aged mirror sits to the side, reflecting the surrounding bushland and drawing light deeper into the room — subtly expanding the galley layout and softening the overall feel.
